Field Trip: An Afternoon at the Art Gallery of Ontario

Hello dear reader!

Last Sunday I took a 2 hour drive with my local visual artists group to the BIG CITY (aka Toronto) to visit the Art Gallery of Ontario.

“Couch Monster: Sadzěʔ yaaghęhch’ill” by Brian Jungen (2022). This is a bronze elephant created from discarded leather sofas!

I don’t feel like I even made a dent in seeing the entire collection, but here are some of my favourite pieces I did see. (Please excuse my poor photography skills…)

Photo of Waterhouse painting "I am half sick of shadows."
“I am half sick of shadows” by John William Waterhouse (1915)

The Lady of Shalott! Waterhouse we meet (in person) at last! I adore his literary lady paintings so I was so excited to finally see one in person.

Next up:

“The Artist’s Painting-Room” by Mary Ann Rebecca Alabaster (1830)

I love Mary’s clever self-portrait of herself painting her self portrait. I wonder if all the other items in the room (the sculpture, the guitar, the books & papers) were also some of her interests?

“The Concert” by Pierre-Auguste Renoir (1918-1919)

Because impressionism. And pink. And flowers.

“Untitled (Cows on a Hillside)” by Kathleen Munn (~1916)

A shoutout to my Canadian painters. This one is painted entirely with small square brushstrokes… how many cows do you see?

“Winter Afternoon, City Street, Toronto” by Lawren Harris (1918)

Harris is one of the founding members of the Group of Seven landscape painters and he’s really managed to make Canadian winter look positively charming here. (It’s not).

“The Shop Girl” by James Tissot (1883-1885). (Sorry about the glare on this one…)

Tissot, how did I not know about you? My favourite part of this painting is how he rendered those ribbons on the table! I can almost feel the silkiness. Note to self: learn more about Tissot.

I hope you enjoyed this mini tour

If you’re an art lover and find yourself in Toronto one day, I highly recommend going to the A.G.O. I’ll be going back one day too.

P.S. Hi I’m Alys, welcome to my little piece of the interwebs.
